Is that a canandian belt knife? I like that a lot. I have been looking for something like that combined with a nessmuck style blade.

This is my Green River Hunter. Modified out of necessity and handled in maple. It was my first time handleing a knife. So far my only experience in it. I use a mora #2/0 also, but I dont have a pic of it.

I've been know to carry this tandem. The necker is a Newt Livesay Celt and the other is my heavily modded Tracker. Mike McConnel at Sugarcreek knife works did the mods.
Re: Knife Pics!!!!
Here's another one:
Redneck Knives woodlore kit... it came as a finished blade and handle materials, I completed the handle and made the sheath.
The blade is 1/8" 1095, the scales are stabilized box elder, and the sheath is 8-9 oz veg tanned leather with my own puke green shade of oil dye

Re: Knife Pics!!!!
I have several knives, none super expensive as I don't want to carry anything that I'm willing to lose. I really like the Mora knives I've gotten but my most recent bit of fun is scouring the thrift stores for old carbon steel knives to modify. I've had some luck in the past couple months and have a few that I have yet to figure out what to do with. Generally I've been finding thinner bladed knives that I'm planning on cutting down to carving and whittling knives. I have found a couple forgecraft slicers that I've cut down to functional bushcraft blades though. Here is a pic but it's older so some are finished products just no current pics to share.

Green River Dadley
It's been a while since I've done anything with a knife so I figured I'd handle a GR Dadley I had sitting around and do a sheath. This one has curly maple scales, brass pins and a few coats of BLO. The sheath is 10oz veg tanned leather hand tooled and stitched, dyed saddle brown with brown Edge Kote. The fit is just a tad snug.
I got the final coat of linseed oil on the handle yesterday. It was good practice and a pleasant project.

That burlap micarta looks amazing! Nice knife Jeff!
Re: Knife Pics!!!!
Looks great guys. I have to have a lot of practice to get anywhere near you guys. I might give it another go. I messed up handling an old hickory mod with antler so I have to try again.

Re: Knife Pics!!!!
Here is my first complete from scratch knife. Though it still in progress, I am stopping at this point for testing. I started with a piece of 1095 high carbon steel. Shaped and ground it out. 4" blade, 4" handle, 5/16" thick and 1-1/2" tall. Hardened and tempered it. Today I did the finish grinding on the edge and stoned it. then we took it out and beat the crap out of it. LOL
Re: Knife Pics!!!!
My brother and I spent about an hour of batoning fresh maple and old ragged oak, made a pot hook, and carved for an hour. Its just as sharp as when I started! I did some cross cut batoning of some 2 inch green maple and some 1 inch dry oak, no problem. I think it's going to be just fine.

Ha! 5/16" would be a better maul than a knife!
CJS Ironclad

Gurthy wrote:Nice knife there Jeff. What is the thickness on that blade?
1/8" steel thickness, 1/8" handle thickness, 1/2" overall thickness. it is easily concealable under your shirt when worn as a neck knife.
Re: Knife Pics!!!!
I've been doing a lot of work and honing my skills on knife making by reshaping the carbon steel kitchen blades. I'm thinking about making the jump to starting from scratch but I have a few questions.
1. Is there a good source locally for steel or what places should I look for to get it? Would a tool and die shop be able to help me out or am I limited to ordering online?
2. O1 seems to be the easiest to work as far as my research has taken me. Would there be a better material to start with?
Here's a little gallery of what I have been doing of late. Starting with the PSK, I did that as a proof-of-concept to myself but I found that I kind of like the look of improvised blades, hence the hand carved yet unfinished handle. I have also been trying to utilize leftover things as well that's why there seem to be little blades with unusual shapes.
Some you've already seen before, others you've seen before they got the mod job. To me, the fun seems to be in the making of the knife so once that's done I'd rather grab another to mod than get out and use the one I just made. Don't get me wrong, these are all users I just like to make things.

Re: Knife Pics!!!!
Those look great Friartuck.
I chose 1095 to start with due to the ease of home heat treating. Mine seems to holding up very well so far. only time will tell though for sure.

i have used both 1095 and O-1 steel, and i really like O-1 better! it is easier to grind, (doesnt throw a lot of sparks like 1095, and is easier to drill) O-1 also doesnt rust as easily as 1095. as far as performance, i havent seen much of a difference. O-1 is a little more expensive, but not bad at all.
i am not sure about the tool and die shop question. i can tell you that knife steel is very cheap and is readily available at many places online. there is a company in Alsip Illinois called Allied Steel. they are a local company that sells lenghts of steel. i wasnt very happy with the order i got from them. the 1095 was warped very bad, and was difficult to work with.
for online steel sources i suggest
Jantz Supply http://www.knifemaking.com/Default.asp
New Jersey Steel Baron http://njsteelbaron.com/
Texas Knife Supply http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=87_924_72
i used to buy a lot from Jantz, but now buy my steel from New Jersey Steel. good quality and good prices. your better off calling Aldo at New Jersey to place your order.
i could go on and on... need anything else just let me know, or post on here!

actually Jeff, O1 steel doesnt need as much heat to get it to "critical temp" before you quench. i dont do my own heat treat, but i am told that O-1 is easier to treat because of that.

Dirt time is the only way to really test these things out! Let's hit the woods this weekend and give em all a real good test.

Re: Knife Pics!!!!
Modded another today. You know how it is when you do something again and again and you get better at it each time? This is I don't know how many projects I've modded but this is the one that I pretty much wanted from the start. It was a Forgecraft butcher knife about 7". I just cut it down and reshaped into a woodlore style blade 5" long. I reshaped the handle somewhat to find my ham fist. I made a PVC pipe sheath and covered that with rawhide stitched with artificial sinew. I need to make a dangle ring for it but I really prefer to have my knife around my neck though.
