Frozen wet wood fires
As was learned over the last weekend: When gathering firewood that is soaked and frozen solid, gather smaller pieces that will thaw, dry and burn faster than larger pieces. The larger the diameter, the longer it will take for the heat from the fire to get to the center. Be sure to leave plenty of air gap for the moisture to escape. Preferably standing the pieces upright in teepee fashion over the hot coals and burning wood. Preperation is even more important than during dry season. Wood will still dry in winter if given enough time. With the weather we have had this year, all of the wood even the standing dead was soaked and frozen.
Place you r next batch of logs around the fire to start the thawing process before adding to the fire. This also give you a place to raise your feet off of the wet cold ground around the fire pit.
DO NOT place a plastic Nalgen bottle anywhere close to the fire unattended! Even for a few minutes, ask me how I know. LOL
