Beware of compass readings
do not take a reading from a compass that is in the proximity of steel or other opposing forces to pull your needle awry!
...for instance i was noticing that my compass was reading about 100 degrees off of what it actually should be reading! and Jeff kindy pointed out that there must be something making the needle do this. So i looked in my pack and found 2 of my bushcraft knives within 4 inches of my compass and when i moved away my knives the compass re aligned itself true! so keep all metal objects away from your compasses! ...learning every outing.

Don't forget that anything with a speake will effect a campass even worse. A cell phone in the pocket or FRS radio too.
We noticed just how much of a difference this makes when orientating a map on a picnic table. The bolts holding the table together were detrimental to the compass accuracy.
