What did you learn at the 15 pc kit campout?
Post here one or two things that you think were the most valuable things you learned during the minimal kit campout.
I personally learned that boiling water to drink sucks! Almost all of the water that I have boiled has been during the winter. Therefore the time it takes for the water to cool enough to drink is very long to say the least. The second day I retrieved another 1qt bottle from the car in order to have something to hold the water in during the processing time. A water filter, be it a straw style or pump is the way to go in an emergency. They are available for $10 -$25 for the straws treating @ 50 gallons each. The Katadyn Hiker Pro is around $65 and treats 500 gallons per filter is clear water like we had. For the weight, they are well worth it.

I was very surprised at how heavy my gear was too.
I know I can get along with even less than I brought. I am going to work on making a minimal kit to carry out.

Re: What did you learn at the 15 pc kit campout?
yep mee to....
here is what i did use
1. hammock
2. tarp
3. wool blanket
4. canteen cup
5. water filter
6 silverware
7. mora knife
8. food
i could acutally do without the hammock and use the tarp on the ground with a heavy space blanket.
so i probabbly could just have had a bedroll and a haversack!

Re: What did you learn at the 15 pc kit campout?
I did sleep the first night on the ground with natural material bedding. It was OK, I survived. I knew I could do it, and I did. If I was out there by myself I would have had a fire in front of my lean-to, and would have been warmer. I was lazy in not doing it as I knew we had a communal fire going and if needed to get warm I had planned on going over to it. We had plenty of room next to it to lay down and keep warm. But why have more than one fire in 45*ish weather.
The second night I hung my hammock, it completed my 15 pieces as without it I was at 14. I used my HD Emergency Blanket for an underquilt and was warm enough.

I freely admit I didn't go minimalist, but here is what I learned:
-what birch sap tastes like (slightly sweet)
-that an AMK bivvy is good for an emergency...but that's about it because the condensation builds up on the inside so fast that it is wet in an hour
-what a northern brown snake looks like
-that my water filter is better than boiling but requires much more maintenance than I remembered
-how to make a "bush concrete" ashtray

I learned that my swedish mess kit is a great tool and I will never part with it.
I learned that a nice big container for water is nice if you have to keep hiking up and down a hill to your water source. Also that a water filter would be great haha.

Water filter makes life easier in warm weather.
Swiss mess kit is great for cooking and baking.
A chair is a well worth the weight for comfort.
Marking a trail to the facilities makes it easier for people to find it when they're in a hurry to find it!
Good people come to our events.
Watch your six when there is a Devil Dog around!
I REALLY don't like sleeping on the ground, my hammock is well worth the weight.
Packing in a small backpack is better than several shoulder bags.
